Harby Mill

The residents of Grade II listed Harby Mill, an iconic landmark on the borders of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, have worked for over four years to upgrade their home with new glazing to improve the aesthetics as well as the energy efficiency of this beautiful property. This year their hard work came to fruition as planning permission was approved for new aluminium glazing by a local fabricator Tradeglaze (Lincoln) Ltd to replace the existing inefficient timber windows and doors. Last week Tradeglaze completed the installation work on this distinctive property to give Harby Mill a new lease of life.

Originally built in 1877 to replace the previous wooden mill, Harby Mill has always been a key building in the local community, converting the labours of humble villagers into flour which was an important part of every family’s diet. Being a tower mill rather than a post mill, Harby Mill always dominated the local landscape. The sails or ‘sweeps’ as they were sometimes called were the most prominent features of the windmill.

Harby Mill fell into disrepair in the early years of the 20th Century and lost its sails. That was until it was rescued 30 years ago and converted into a quirky and luxurious five-storey home. A two-storey extension was added in 2004 and, since then, the owners have continued the programme of restoration and renovation to maintaining the mill’s character and charm. The most recent additions are AluK 58BW Heritage aluminium windows and 58BD doors, which have been installed throughout, will keep the mill superbly insulated and looking beautiful for many decades to come.

The residents of Harby Mill, Steve and Maria Michael said: “We have been working for over four years to get to this moment, so the sense of achievement and pride, now that our new windows and doors have been finally installed, is hard to describe. As for any owner of a listed property, finding the right company to take time to understand our requirements and provide a bespoke product and a carefully tailored service, has been key. We considered other options but the team at Tradeglaze have been terrific and their Heritage Windows profile range, with an authentic look and excellent weather performance, were ideal for our property and for getting our planning permission approved. We are delighted as the look and feel is exactly what we had hoped for!”

Jeremy Wetherall, the Managing Director of Tradeglaze (Lincoln) Ltd, added: “We are thrilled to have been entrusted with this unique project. It has taken over a year of careful consultation, surveying and planning but our dedicated teams are well known for their ability to deliver the perfect bespoke solution for our customers. The demand for our Heritage Windows is rapidly increasing as the slim sightlines of the aluminium profile are ideal for listed buildings and the product has superb energy efficiency qualities. We are really proud of our work on Harby Mill and are very happy that we could help Steve and Maria realise their dream.”

Justin Hunter, the Managing Director of AluK GB, said: “This was an almost textbook example of how our 58BW ST window system can be used preserve the authentic character of a traditional property, while at the same time bringing the energy performance and security features bang up to date. Tradeglaze and Mr and Mrs Michael deserve enormous credit for a job very well done.”
