Why choose aluminium for your next trade or commercial project?

Aluminium has been a popular choice for the construction industry for many decades and its popularity continues to soar. Aluminium is incredibly versatile and has many excellent qualities to make it a great choice for new builds, refurbishment or construction of commercial buildings as well as residential projects.

At Tradeglaze, we work with the industry’s leading manufacturing brands AluK and Senior Architectural Systems to source the most advanced window, door and curtain walling systems on the market. Our products are made bespoke to each project in our Lincoln-based factory and we offer supply only and supply & fit options.

Here are some of the key benefits of aluminium explaining why it is such a utilised material within the construction industry.

1. Highly durable

Aluminium is incredibly durable as it is naturally weather-proof and corrosion resistant. This makes it the perfect material for buildings, structures and fixtures such as aluminium bi-folding doors and windows for homes. Aluminium frames are made from alloys that are immune to harmful effects of UV rays, out-performing other construction materials and ensuring optimal performance over a very long lifetime.

2. Highly flexible for design

Aluminium’s combination of properties mean that it can be easily shaped by any of the main industrial metalworking processes, including rolling, extrusion, forging and casting. As such, aluminium offers a high level of flexibility for architectural projects.

3. Lightweight

Aluminium is easier and cheaper to transport than many other materials, such as steel, as aluminium is a third of the weight of its metal counterpart. Because of its light weight, aluminium allows for quicker construction and completion of projects due to its ease of movement.

4. Environmentally friendly

Aluminium is one of the most sustainable construction materials available, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the lifecycle costing of a building. Aluminium does not age like other organic materials and needs no protection from ultra-violet light. Its overall life-cycle is more environmentally friendly due to the minimum energy required in maintenance and the well-established, proven design life of aluminium assures that it will provide a long term solution year on year with the guarantee of 100% recyclability at the end of a building’s life. This makes it a reliable material for the use of any construction project that requires sustainability without sacrificing durability.

5. Thermally conductive

Aluminium is an excellent heat conductor meaning that, when it is used to build houses or other buildings, it works to retain heat inside the building. However, the modern aluminium used in construction utilises a polyamide thermal break to create a barrier between the cold outside and warm inside, which is just one of several ways to strengthen aluminium and creates an even stronger barrier-like effect between external and internal temperatures.

6. Corrosion resistant

Last but not least, aluminium naturally generates a protective coating of a thin yet very strong layer of aluminium oxide, making it perfect to use as a protective external material. This protective layer helps shield the surface of the metal from corrosion over time as well as any extreme weather which would otherwise damage a structure. The natural formation of aluminium also means that it is fire-resistant, making it a great material to be used for doors, windows and wall panels in public buildings such as offices, schools, shopping centres or hospitals.
